Tom was educated at St Peter's School, York before becoming articled to Walton Watts & Co, a Manchester firm of Chartered Accountants in 1953.
After he qualified as an accountant and completed National Service, where Tom became a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, he joined Refuge Assurance Co Ltd (latterly Refuge Group plc) at its headquarters in Oxford Street, Manchester and was appointed Company Secretary in 1972 before becoming Chief Executive in 1979 and eventually Chairman in 1988.
Within the community Tom has served as the Chairman of North West Region of the CBI; a Founder Chairman of South and East Cheshire Training and Enterprise Council, President of Manchester Luncheon Club, Chairman of the Board of Governors of Manchester Metropolitan University, Non executive Director of several local companies and Chairman of the Disley Branch WEA.
Tom was appointed Accountant Laureate by the Founding Societies of Chartered Accountants in 1989 and was awarded a CBE in 1991 for services to industry in Cheshire. Currently he is a Trustee of the CRH Charitable Trust, and Chairman of Trustees of the Cheadle Royal Hospital Pension Fund.
Tom is married to Patricia, with two children and five grandchildren.
