Dame Alexandra Vivien Burslem DBE OBE JP DL

Dame Alexandra Vivien BurslemAlexandra Burslem was Vice-Chancellor of Manchester Metropolitan University from 1997-2005; she has now been appointed a Civil Service Commissioner. Alexandra also Chairs the Education Honours Committee, and is the first Independent Chair of the British Council's Education-UK Partnership. Other former academic appointments include Deputy Chair of the Learning and Skills Council nationally, Chair of the National Quality Assurance Framework Review Group for HE, a member of the HE Funding Council's Quality Assurance and Learning and Teaching Committee.

Alexandra sits on the Boards of a number of educational institutions, including the Royal Northern College of Music, City College, Manchester, and is Chair of the governors of Chetham's School of Music. She has been a member of the Bench of Manchester City Magistrates since 1981. She was awarded an OBE for services to Higher Education in 1992 and became Dame Commander of the British Empire in the New Year Honours in 2004.

She was appointed Deptuty Lieutenant in 2004 and was High Sheriff for Greater Manchester in 2006-7.
