Mrs B Vivien Carter MBE JP DL BEd
Vivien began her working life as a teacher. However, believing she would be a better teacher if she broadened her experience, she moved into industry. Most of her time was spent working at British Gas, in a strange amalgam of PR and Marketing. An accident curtailed her work there and she later returned to teaching English as a Foreign Language becoming Education Director of Specialist Language company. At the same time she chaired a small family engineering company.
She was appointed as a magistrate in 1974, at that time she was one of the youngest magistrates in the country; today she has been a magistrate for more than half her life!
Whilst she was chairman of the Youth Court it came to light that most young offenders did not have school places. As a result, ten years ago, the Youth Court Magistrates set up a charity in Rochdale, to deal with disaffected young people and she now chairs and manages this charity.
She continues as secretary of "The Ribble Link", a small group who built a new waterway linking two major canals in the Preston area.
She has two children that have now "grown and flown".
In the New Years Honours List 2007 she was awarded an MBE. Viv was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant in 2003.
