J Peter Hadfield OBE JP DL

Peter was born in LEEDS Yorkshire and also lived in Sheffield before going to school at Brighton. He married Iris Brailsford in 1949 who was a WRNS officer at the enigma decoding centre Bletchley Park and then to the Far East to decoding, of Japanese signals. Peter met her at the end of the war in Singapore in 1945. They have 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren; Iris died 1995. Peter remarried Elizabeth Wood 1999 an international ballet dancer who has 1 son and 2 granddaughters.

In the war he volunteered and joined the Army in a Tank Regt, sent to Royal Military College Sandhurst and was commissioned and posted to the Far East joined 2nd British Division 14th Army and served in a number of theatres India Malaya Singapore Sumatra as a Captain in what is now the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. On returning to India for Demob he was awarded The Commander-in Chief India (Field Marshall Sir Claude Auchinleck) Commendation for exemplary conduct and leadership in dealing with the Police riots in Gaya Bihar.

He joined Bass Ratcliffe & Gretton Burton on Trent as a Brewer in 1947. In 1953 was moved to London as Technical Dept Manager responsible for the bottling of Bass Red Triangle & Worthington White Shield quality throughout all the Brewers who bottled these beers for their public houses in the South East. Attended Ashridge Management College also. Moved to Newcastle upon Tyne 1962 as Bass Agent then 1966 to Leeds as MD of Bass Mitchells & Butlers (Northern ) Ltd. Again moved to Birmingham 1968 as Tied Trade Director of Bass Mitchells & Butlers Ltd responsible for some 3000 public houses. Had the Birmingham pub bombings in two of our city centre pubs which was a dreadful experience for the people of Birmingham. Director Bass Marketing Ltd Bass UK Ltd. Also attended Harvard Business School. Moved to Yeovil 1976 as Chairman & MD o Bass South West Ltd. In 1977 posted to Manchester as MD (Later Chairmen & MD) of Bass North West Ltd Retired after nearly 40 years with Bass in 1986 During my time with Bass in the North West became Chairman of North West Regional Board of British Institute of Management, also on National Council. On National & local councils of CBI President of North Cheshire Inst of Man.

On retirement he was appointed Chairman of the Residuary Body to wind up the Greater Manchester Council. In that role over 4 years became director Greater Manchester Economic Development Council Chairman Central Station Prop Ltd Greater Manchester Property Trust Director Crown Plaza Midland Hotel and member of the Olympic Bid Committee. After The Residuary Body he became the founder Chairman of Trafford Park Dev Corp; Chairman South Manchester Health Authority 1990-1994; Chairman of South Manchester University Hospital NHS Trust 1994-1997 which included getting one of the first PFI to develop Wythenshawe Hospital.

Peter was also Director Lloyds Bank PLC North West Burtonwood Brewery Petros Ltd Savoy Hotel (Blackpool)Ltd Member Manchester Chamber of commerce Trustee The Hammond School Chester Member David Lewis Centre Patron Henshaws School for the Blind. He is a member of the Institute of Brewing Liveryman Worshipful Company of Brewers Freeman of the City of London. Captain and President of Prestbury Golf Club.
