Professor Sir Netar Mallick DL MB FRCP
Sir Netar Mallick is Professor Emeritus of Renal Medicine in Manchester. He is one of Her Majesty's Deputy Lieutenants for Greater Manchester and was High Sheriff of Greater Manchester 2002-2003; he was knighted in 1998. He recently demitted office as Medical Director of the National Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards (2003-06) having been Medical Director of the Advisory Committee on Distinction Awards 1999-03.
While in the University Department of Medicine in Cardiff, where he planned the Renal Unit, he was a member of the Minister of Health's Working Party on Treatment for Renal Failure from 1965 -1967.
From 1967 he worked in the University Department of Medicine in Manchester as Lecturer then Senior Lecturer in Medicine and was Associate Director of the Renal Transplantation Unit from its inception in 1968. From 1973, as Consultant Renal Physician, he developed an internationally recognised Department of Renal Medicine integrated with the Transplantation service.
He has been President of the Renal Association of Great Britain and Ireland and Adviser to Her Majesty's Government on renal disease, President, Nephrology Board, Union European des Mèdicins Specialistes, Chairman of the European Dialysis and Transplantation Association Registry and as such a Council Member of the European Renal Association. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and ad personam of the Colleges of Physicians of Edinburgh and of Ireland and of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was Inaugural Fellow of the British Renal Society 2003 and first holder of a Lifetime Achievement Award for Asians 2003 (Jewel Awards). He has written and lectured widely on renal disease and renal replacement therapy.
Until 2000 he was Medical Director of Central Manchester Trust. . He has been President of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society and of the Manchester Medical Society.
He and Mary married in 1960 and have three daughters and three grandsons. They are interested in sport, wine, travel, family and friends.
