Michael J. Oglesby Esq. CBE DL

Michael OglesbyMichael Oglesby (68) was born in Scunthorpe Lincolnshire and, after receiving a degree in building at Aston University, spent his early working years in the construction industry before moving to Manchester in 1970.

He has been married for over 40 years to his wife Jean and they live in Bowdon. They have two children Chris and Kate, both of whom work in the family business, and five grandchildren.

He is a strong believer in the strength of the family and the importance of the role which core family values bring to a family owned business. The role of business and business leaders in the community is seen by him as being key and, over recent years, he has spent a significant amount of time in this area.

In 1978 Michael Oglesby, DL LLD BSc founded the Bruntwood group of companies, of which is is now Chairman. At the beginning of 2000 he gave up the joint roles of CEO and Chairman and his son, Chris, took of the over the day to day running of the Company. Brunwood owns in excess of 90 buildings in Central and South Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham comprising approximately 5,500,000 sq ft. In Manchester City Centre, Bruntwood owns approximately 20% of the commercial office stock and year on year has acquired and let more property than any other company in this market.

Currently Michael Oglesgy devotes approximately a quarter of the week to the Company as executive Chairman, and the remainder to an extensive variety of civic and charitable interests.
Currently he is chairman of:

• The Steering Board for the Manchester Cancer Research Centre
• MIDAS - the inward investment organisation for Greater Manchester
• The Board of Governors of the Royal Northern College of Music
• Oglesby Charitable Trust

In addition he sits on the Board of North West Business Leadership Team, Manchester Enterprises, the Manchester International Festival and Manchester University Global Leadership Board. He is also Vice President of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

In 2006 he was voted Businessman of the Year in the North West by the CBI and in May 2006 he received an honorary law doctorate from the University of Manchester. In June 2007 Aston University awarded him an honorary science doctorate and in December 2007 the RNCM presented him with an honorary membership.

Personal interests are varied and include theatre, music, sailing, skiing and walking.

Michael was appointed High Sheriff of Greater Manchester for 2007/2008.
