Clerk to the Lieutenancy

The Lord-Lieutenant is seeking to appoint the Clerk to the Lieutenancy . This exciting opportunity would suit an experienced and organised individual who would join the team, in the Greater Manchester Lieutenancy Office, based in the Valo Building in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester. This is a newly modernised building situated next to Lancashire Cricket Club and is accessible by road and an excellent public transport system including two, close by, Metrolink Stations.

The Lord-Lieutenant and the Lieutenancy

The Lieutenancy is composed of people who have given significant public service in one form or another. The principal person is the Lord-Lieutenant who is appointed by His Majesty The King and is his representative in the county. The Lord-Lieutenant is supported by a Vice Lord-Lieutenant and Deputy Lieutenants that she appoints.

The primary role of the Lord Lieutenant is to uphold the dignity of the Crown but she also arranges visits of the members of the Royal Family, presents medals and awards on behalf of the Sovereign, participates in civic and voluntary activities, liaises with the Armed Forces and their association of cadets, and actively promotes national recognition and awards in The King’s name.

The Lieutenancy office consists of three part-time staff who support the Lord-Lieutenant in her duties and act as the principle point of contact for all enquiries.

The Role

The Clerk to the Lieutenancy is appointed by the Lord-Lieutenant in accordance with the S5 (1) Lieutenancy Act 1997. This function is usually undertaken by the Chief Executive of the County Council but in Metropolitan Counties it is a specific role undertaken by a person of standing and integrity in the County. In Greater Manchester this is a part-time role working 22.5 hours per week over three days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). The Lieutenancy office is open during office hours from Monday to Thursday inclusive. This is a hybrid role with the ability to work from home when needed or required.

The responsibilities of the Clerk include managing the Lieutenancy office, communications, and facilitating the Lord-Lieutenant’s work which involves events like royal visits, presentations of honours and awards, and various local civic duties. The successful candidate should be confident, well organised and have previous experience within a similar role i.e. supporting a senior public figure. Confidentiality is a key characteristic of this position.

Salary, Holidays and Benefits
The role is offering a salary of £33,000 (£55,000 pro-rata) for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will be entitled to 15 days paid holiday per year (5 weeks) and also all Bank Holidays.

The role comes with a free car park space located at the Valo Building. There is a café on site but the office also has access to full kitchen facilities.
