Born and raised in Salford, Michael is committed to creating opportunities for young people and championing social mobility, drawing on his own lived experience. He graduated from the University of Salford with a degree in Geography before completing his teacher training at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Michael began his teaching career in Salford schools before joining Manchester Grammar School in 2017. He is now Assistant Headteacher for Service and Partnership, where he leads work that strengthens relationships between schools, communities and charitable organisations, creating opportunities for young people to thrive.
A qualified Mountain Leader, Michael has a longstanding commitment to the transformative power of outdoor education and adventure. He has volunteered with The Scouts for many years, holding a variety of leadership roles at both local and national levels. He currently serves on The Scouts National Awards Advisory Committee and has been Chair of Cheshire Scout County since 2023, having previously served as Deputy Chair. Michael is also a strong advocate for The Scouts and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, both of which he credits with having played a significant role in shaping his own life.
In 2021, Michael was appointed as a Magistrate in Greater Manchester. As a volunteer member of the judiciary, he is committed to serving his community through the fair and impartial administration of justice.
Michael has extensive experience in charity and education governance. He served as a National Trustee for The Scouts and was Chair of Trustees for Proud and Loud Arts for over eight years, supporting the organisation through a period of significant development, including receiving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2019 and becoming an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation in 2022. He previously served as a governor at Ashcroft School, part of The Together Trust, and is currently a governor at Lowry Academy in Salford. Michael was also a trustee of the Bond Board and is currently a trustee of Greater Manchester Youth Federation and Skelton Charity.
A proud Salfordian, Michael remains committed to strengthening communities and improving opportunities for others. Through his work in education, volunteering, governance and public service, he continues to support initiatives that make a lasting difference across Greater Manchester.
